Sign up to listen to, meet and chat with three world-leading authorities: Joanne Avison, John Sharkey, and Wilbour Kelsick as they host a three-day workshop on Biotensegrity Informed Movement Science and Bodywork Therapy.
This three-day conference marks a historical development in bodywork and movement science in Canada. Therapists and practitioners alike have long been searching for explanations and answers that make sense of the bodies they work with every day. Conventional anatomy books and explanations provided by classical biomechanics texts fall short of the reality that is biotensegrity. This unique event will provide answers to the burning questions you want to ask.
Your thought process will never be the same. These experienced presenters will reflect a language and vocabulary that translates complicated science into digestible bite-size practical therapeutic interventions for both manual and movement practitioners.
Get ready for a truly different educational experience. Secure your place for this historic event now!
Three days of dynamic thought-changing workshops where you will learn the fundamental context of human body architecture and discover the historical developments that will help you explore clinical applications in human anatomy and movement
Vital new concepts and vision in exercise science
Applications to help practitioners of all stripes to translate their knowledge into 21st century anatomy and physiology specific to human movement and bodywork therapy
Real anatomy and never seen before audiovisual footage of cadaveric dissection that changes our view of human locomotion
Mind-blowing presentations that will quench your burning desire for knowledge
Amazing presenters that have earned international reputations as leading pioneers in the area of biotensegrity, anatomy, physiology, bodywork and movement therapy
A unique aspect of the workshops will be the integration of the Biotensegrity model into each practitioner’s own area of specialty. The workshops are specifically designed to meet the needs of all learners and will provide a paradigm shift that is both powerful and readily applicable on return to your practice. If your career concerns helping others to run faster, jump higher, reduce or manage chronic pain, minimize & prevent sport injuries, provide surgery with minimal invasion, move in a more functional manner or educate based on accurate gold standard anatomy then these workshops and short presentations are for you.
John will share his expansive force movements with rotations and force expression with or without impact in a natural way that will help everyone from chronic pain patients to Olympian class “elite” athletes. Biotensegrity informed movement leads to joint expansive (or open forces) as opposed to joint compression (or closing forces). Mixing simple assessment strategies with easy to complete neuromuscular efficient movement results in motion as nature intended. To support John’s manual therapy and movement approach this bespoke workshop will utilize cadaveric images and video content from the highly acclaimed biotensegrity focused dissection courses held in Dundee University, Scotland.
The workshop will begin with a keynote presentation setting the scene and providing the rationale behind biotensegrity informed movement and manual therapy. John encourages questions and open discussion. This is followed by manual interventions utilized to set the stage for neuromuscular efficient movement. The remainder of the workshop will involve instruction on safe, appropriate and effective use of ropes and sandbells promoting natural healthy movement.
Together with clinical anatomist, exercise physiologist and manual therapist John Sharkey you will explore the wholeness of our living form in movement and in quiescence. John’s presentations revolve around his unique concept of biotensegrity as “anatomy for the 21st Century”.
Join Joanne Avison for a fascinating insight into the story of us. We each emerge from one original cell; folding, weaving and spiraling shape us into what we eventually become. From that one original cell, we shape our unique biotensegrity architecture. The manner in which our architecture is structured is essential to the understanding of our form and the transmission of forces facilitated within it. This presentation will expose delegates to a new vision that prompts us to consider how we grow our bodies through gestures, impulses and rhythmical sensory resonance fields. This vision changes how we practice our own movements in any movement discipline, and emphasizes how we touch and adjust our clients and patients through the subtle geometries of our living architectures.
The day will begin with a short presentation concerning the embryological formation of the sensory, fluidic living architecture. There will be basic group work regarding the manner in which the biotensegrity model is expressed through the fascial matrix.
The remainder of the day will include a group dynamic involved in a subtle movement inquiry. This will be based on restorative yoga movements that apply in Pilates, or other movement situations. You will discover how the breath can be used wisely in any teaching or coaching of movement, whatever the discipline.
Joanne will guide you towards exploring every day movements that restore the soft tissues and bring the sense of inquiry, and the curiosity of the beginner’s (embryo) mindset to the mat. You will explore movement, gesture, breath and the essential element of rest to the body, in the natural living form. Simple techniques will provide you with the kind of “take away” that will enhance private practice and add to the tool box that improve client posture and well-being, whatever your modality.
Many exercise programs are designed without dated concepts about human gross anatomy and knowledge of its fascia architecture. The techniques and body posture used by most practitioners continue to be favoured due to popularity or because ‘it’s always been this way. ’ As a result, many exercise routines do not demonstrate any functional basis for their effectiveness. Evidence has shown that many exercises do not target the true bio-movements of sporting activities in an effective and functional manner. Simply Functional Training is training that is specific to the body’s bio-movement that you are attempting to execute.
This type of segmental training creates more myofascial imbalances and creates a platform in the body’s structure which increases the risk of injury and substandard performance. The concept of Global Functional Training (GFT) approach with proper posture to address the biotensegrity nature of body architecture is more effective and efficient. GFT prevents imbalances in the body milieu, reduces the risk of injuries, improves the elastic integrity of the body tissues, and ultimately enhances performance.
In other words, it is time we move away from “The One Size Fits All” cliché.
This hands-on workshop will address the clinical implication (effects on body’s structure) of non-functional exercise techniques for typical body’s strength & condition training programs. The more functional biotensegral approach (alternative techniques & postures) to replace these conventional types of exercises routines will be highlighted and demonstrated.
The following will be discussed and demonstrated:
